Missouri Rural Health Day Celebrates Third Annual Event Recognizing Contributions of Rural Communities and Healthcare Providers

Missouri Rural Health Day is dedicated to honoring the vital contributions and unwavering efforts of rural communities and healthcare providers in the state. Aligned with the broader National Rural Health Day initiative, this event, observed on the third Thursday of November, centers around the theme “Power of Rural.” The celebration, organized by the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services’ Office of Rural Health and Primary Care (ORHPC), was held at the Governor’s Office Building in Jefferson City, Missouri.

The essence of the celebration lies in acknowledging the selfless and community-minded spirit of rural communities and healthcare providers. The highlight of the event is the recognition of Rural Health Champions, individuals whose outstanding efforts have significantly contributed to addressing health equity and healthcare challenges in rural areas.

The distinguished honorees of the 2023 Rural Health Champions include Nancy Lock, Beverly Williams, Sarah Willoughby, and Kathleen Lenz. These champions received accolades and proclamations from Missouri Governor Mike Parsons, commending their dedication to providing quality care and services to their communities.

Collaborating with ORHPC partners and sponsors such as the Missouri Hospital Association (MHA), Missouri Immunization Coalition (MIC), Missouri Primary Care Association (MPCA), Missouri Rural Health Association (MRHA), Missouri University Rural Scholars Program, Missouri Area Health Education Centers (AHEC), A.T. Still University (ATSU) – Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine (KCOM). The Missouri Center for Public Health Excellence (MOCPHE) played a pivotal role in making Rural Health Day a resounding success.

This marks the third consecutive year of participation for the Missouri Immunization Coalition, reinforcing its commitment to safeguarding Missourians’ health through immunizations. “The Missouri Immunization Coalition aims to elevate the crucial role vaccinations play in curbing the spread of vaccine-preventable diseases and fostering overall health for all Missourians,” said Nicole Cope, MIC’s Executive Director.

As a united front, these organizations strive to support and promote the celebration of Rural Health Day, recognizing the indispensable work of healthcare providers and communities in rural Missouri. The collaborative effort emphasizes the significance of ongoing initiatives, communication, education, and innovation to enhance the health and well-being of approximately 57 million rural Americans across the nation, including those right here in Missouri.
